Precision dosing set to shake up medicine

In this article:

It’s becoming very clear that the time for precision dosing – a key component of precision medicine – has now come.

Recently, Gonzelez et al. published their review, « Precision Dosing: Public Health Need, Proposed Framework, and Anticipated Impact ». He not only discusses the further developments required to make precision dosing a reality in clinical practice, but the clear and resounding benefits:

“Supporting precision dosing for relevant drugs, should maximize medication efficacy and minimize medication toxicities. Precision dosing could also plausibly increase adherence as drug efficacy increases and toxicity decreases, resulting in decreased healthcare costs.

Sponsors should benefit, in that their products will have an improved efficacy/safety profile. Regulatory agencies may also benefit because more patients will be better served and their internal analyses can be useful beyond the approval and labeling decisions.”

Gonzalez et al. clearly consider that precision dosing tools will deliver significant impact to clinical outcomes and cost.

So why has the time for precision dosing come now?

The biggest change we have witnessed over the past few years is the dramatic increase in hospitals with functional electronic medical record systems. While the science behind precision dosing was first developed in the 1960s, and has been widely demonstrated as effective, the real challenge is integration into hospital and clinical workflows. Without integration into the EMR/EHR, integrating all of the different data sources required is challenging without the slow process of manual double-entry.

Last year, DoseMeRx became available in Cerner Millennium® via SMART® and FHIR® technologies, with other major EHR providers including Epic and Allscripts due to launch early this year, ensuring access to precision dosing is simple to deploy and easy to use within hospital and clinical workflows.

This all adds up to a pretty large shake-up for clinical outcomes at both the public health and individual levels. The shake up is starting now.

To learn more about the coming impact I highly recommend you take the time to read this article – Gonzalez et al. (2017). « Precision Dosing: Public Health Need, Proposed Framework, and Anticipated Impact ».
