ASHP Midyear: Presentations You Shouldn’t Miss This Year

In this article:

The 55th annual American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) meeting will be held virtually from December 6-10, 2020.  The multi-day meeting includes an impressive number of posters and clinical oral sessions that span across every facet of health-systems pharmacy. I spent some time looking over the pre-meeting agenda and have highlighted a few sessions and posters that are relevant to the field of precision medication dosing and antimicrobial stewardship that you may find of interest.

ASHP Midyear Clinical Sessions – Precision Medication Dosing

  • Vancomycin Therapeutic Drug Monitoring – The Times They Are a Changin’ . (On demand) – Of course this topic is of great interest to us! Experts Dr. Lina Meng, Dr. Evan Zasowski, and Dr. Will Musick are sharing their clinical experiences with implementing a vancomycin AUC clinical program and will highlight how to use Bayesian software (such as DoseMeRx) for vancomycin dosing.
  • Efficacy to the Max: Dose Optimization for Beta-Lactams with Beta-Lactamase Inhibitors (On-demand) – This session, co-sponsored by ASHP and the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists features Drs. Ryan Crass and Marc Scheetz as presenters. During this session, they will evaluate risk factors, review current data and provide a patient case that demonstrates how to optimize dosing of newer beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor therapy.
  • Drug Dosing in Morbid Obesity (Sunday, December 6, 2020) – Drs. Brian Erstad and Jeffrey Barletta will discuss the pharmacokinetic variability that exists in morbidly obese patients and provide case studies for how to dose medications in this patient population
  • The Effects of Augmented Renal Clearance on Antibiotics in Critically-ill Adult and Pediatric Patients: The Need for Exposure Guided Dosing (Wednesday, December 9, 2020)  – Drs. Sean Avedissian and Jennifer Le will be addressing a newer area of interest in the world of pharmacokinetics – augmented renal clearance. In addition to discussing the proposed mechanisms and clinical risk factors for augmented renal clearance, they will also highlight a patient case where this information can be applied.

ASHP Midyear Clinical Sessions – Antimicrobial Stewardship

  • Improving Antibiotic Stewardship Using Multidisciplinary Rounds in a Critical Access Hospital (Sunday, December 6, 2020) – Dr. Herb Hunter, Director of Pharmacy at a critical access hospital in the Midwest US describes their successful stewardship program in this unique setting
  • Vancomycin + Piperacillin/Tazobactam: Does it Kill Your Kidneys? (Monday, December 7th) – Dr. Marc Scheetz , a noted expert in this area, discusses the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic interaction that drives vancomycin-induced kidney injury and reviews the literature on this topic.
  • Management Case Study – Practicing Tele-Stewardship Before Tele-Stewardship Was Cool (or Prompted by COVID-19) – This on-demand session is led by Dr. Jessica Sobnosky who is an Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Stewardship Clinical Pharmacist at a large community hospital in Kentucky. She highlights their innovative tele-stewardship program and will discuss how telepharmacy can be utilized for other services lines in healthcare (On Demand)
